The Quran upholds the respect of other religions as a core principle; those who were the beneficiaries of revelations prior to the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad are honored as "people of the book" and are thus accorded the same rights as regards to the inviolability of their person, wealth and property. From a historical perspective, Islam has lived side by side with other religions in Europe (Islamic Spain and the Balkans, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Current tensions between religions are more attributable to political and economic factors than they are to inherent hostilities between practitioners of different religions.
